TouchPad 3.0.2 Update is Here! (How Does It Work?)

by GizmoGladstone ‎08-02-2011 12:53 PM - edited ‎08-03-2011 02:22 PM

CIMG0195.jpgIt’s been one month since the TouchPad launched, but it is here – webOS 3.0.2. HP engineers have been working feverishly to deliver this update that provides a number of performance and feature-related boosts. Jon Zilber gave an overview and some details about how updates work over on the webOS GBU blog. Now it’s my turn at bat. Read on for a breakdown on improvements that came in the update, plus some observations about what’s happenin in the 3-0-2:

(Derek Kessler over at PreCentral.net has a pretty solid walkthrough of the update – plus video. I used some of his quotes below.)

Calendar
-Quicker Just Type event search and event creation
-Improved handling of meeting cancellations

My Two Cents: This is kinda self-explanatory – and it does make meetings a whole lot better. I rely on the TouchPad now to set up my Outlook meetings at the office. Calendar searches in Just Type aren’t just quicker; they seem a lot faster than before. The only thing I wish I could do here – see other people’s availability for meetings through the TouchPad.

Email
-Faster scrolling
-Improved message content and image display
-Improved management of multiple emails in Draft and Outbox views

Email is significantly smoother. Seriously, it’s noticeably faster. There’s not much more to say about that, it’s just plain better.” – Derek Kessler

My Two Cents: I was pretty happy with email the first go-round. Then I saw the update and noticed the difference. There used to be an odd image / text display moment when opening an occasional email. That hasn’t happened again yet since I updated yesterday.

Music
-Reduced audio skipping when the device is running other applications
-Better display of album art

“The Music app has received a much needed facelift that brings it in line with the styling of webOS 3.0, and thank goodness for that. The layout is generally the same, and at least for this blogger, the app is finally detecting the music loaded onto the TouchPad.” – Derek Kessler

My Two Cents: You should try Web streaming music, Derek. I just saw someone in the office earlier today using GrooveShark and it looks / sounds awesome on the TouchPad.

Photos & Videos
-Added ability to set wallpapers
-Faster and more reliable handling of individual photos and albums

videoflood.jpgText Assist
-Improved speed and accuracy of auto-corrections

Text Assist has been updated to be faster and more accurate, as well as gaining main much-missed contractions.” – Derek Kessler

My Two Cents: As an admitted lazy typist, I realized I missed this more than just about anything else. I can’t be bothered to stop my flow just to quest for an apostrophe! Ahem. Anyhow, it works great in non-searchable fields and apps, but as Kessler noted, it won’t work in a browser’s search window like, say, if you’re entering a field in Google search or typing comments to a blog post.

Web
-Increased scrolling support compatibility within web pages
-Improved performance of remote HTML5 video playback
-Improved responsiveness of auto correction within the browser

My Two Cents: I can honestly say that I’ve already seen the biggest, most marked improvement right here. Previously, watching streamed flash video through the browser was possible, sure, but it was a cache-clearing dance to make sure it’d run trouble free. Now, thanks to the update, I was able to catch an episode of The Daily Show from Comedy Central’s page without breaking a sweat. I know that I’ve said this before, but check out Video Flood HD. It is very handy for finding video streams. Now that the update is here, I also find myself doubling back and looking for more ambitious Flash games to see how well they’ll run on the system now. (Stay tuned for an update or two on that!)

webOS System
-Fixed issues with oversensitive screen rotation (!!)

My Two Cents: This was a big one for me, no more herky-jerky screen rotation when I don’t want it!

Security
-This release addresses a number of security issues with HP webOS software.

…and not in the update, but…. Pivot Issue 2 is out
I know that it isn’t a huge deal, but the second issue is out for the App Store magazine. There was a story that I wanted to read in the July issue but didn’t get around to – hopefully, there will be a way to grab back issues of Pivot in the future! I can dream.

“Overall, it's a nice little update that should solve some of the problems that some users have had since the TouchPad launched just one month ago.” – Derrek Kessler

touchpad play thumb2.jpgMy Two Cents: However you slice this, 3.0.2 is actually improving my overall experience. I’ve noticed that my TouchPad now boots roughly 15 to 20 percent faster in my subjective tests. Apps load a little snappier and, as I noted above, the in-browser experience is LOADS better.

Also, I’m happy to see a clock app added (It was already there in Exhibition mode, but now it’s an obvious app). There’s also a basic calculator in tow. Still MIA: Tasks. But, if you’re jonesing for it, just download Taskr – it’s free!

Oh, yeah, and as a Pro Tip for all you homebrewers out there: Consult Preware / PreCentral.Net forums and update your tweaks to work on the new OS update.

Obviously, I’m a little “teh bias” as an HP company man, but I’d like to think it shows that we’re paying attention to what people are saying. So what are you thinking? Did we hit the mark? Is there more that you’d like to see happen (within reason, people….!)? Let us know!

Would like to see an easier way to place a cursor while typing and would love to see QuickBooks updated.  Other than that, I'm happier with the new updates.

Amazon Music Cloud works as well! So does Google Music, and of course Grooveshark. I would LOVE native apps for Amazon and Grooveshark though. Come on Richard Kerris...! Lets get those guys to make us an app!

I would like to see a Slacker Radio app. I have not had luck with their web player. I really appreciate the work done to give is this update.

All good suggestions!

Me: I'd love to see arrow key support throughout the OS for the Bluetooth keyboard. (Hint: poppa needs to be able to play Flash games that require arrow keys!)

Great update, definitely improved webpage viewing.  There is still (but less than before) an issue with opening pictures on facebook in the browser, check it out.  Also, it will be nice so be able to select for viewing only new e-mails in the e-mail application, instead of scrolling through all e-mails.  Last but not least, We need arrows for navegating/editing text, specially on web addresses (it is too hard).  Please, please, enable gestures for switching between open applications and for going back and forward on the browser, etc.  Thanks.

I was happy to see that I could play Scrabble in Facebook which is a Flash App. Previously I couldn't get drag-and-drop to work so I couldn't select my tiles. I had tried using the Scrabble app published by EA but found to my dismay that the app isn't HD and doesn't connect to the Scrabble servers so you can't play network games. I had some problems initially with the browser changing "&" in URLs to "&" which was wrong. A reboot fixed it so the URLs work, but the displayed URL still shows the wrong value. At least it's working. Overall, a good update. I'd like to see SVG support in the browser. The Google chart APIs use SVG for some chart types so I can't use my Touchpad with a few of my work related websites. It would also be real nice if Netflix was available.

I should have looked at the preview before posting. The problem I had with ampersands is that it the browser changes urls with ampersands to be an ampersand followed by "amp" and a semicolon. While that is correct syntax when coded into an HTML HREF, that is not how you manually enter a URL in a browser location bar.

How about a real bookmark manager for the browser? The single long list is awful.

<p>

How about a way to bounce through the stack of web pages when trying to select the correct card? I can usually figure out which one I want to select based on the little bit that sticks out. It would be easier if I could just pop the bottom of the stack onto the top, or pop the top of the stack onto the bottom.

The cursor placement is still really tough; it would be better to just have the arrows on the keyboard for scrolling.  The alternate language keyboard choices that keep popping up for letters as I type is SUPER inconvenient and slowing me down a lot.  Is there any way to turn that off?  I'm not typing in a language other than English.

Would like the well publicized Netflix app to finally hit the system.  Would like Slacker radio back as well.  It's part of the reason I bought the device.

Glad my family and I didn't waste our money buying another "new idea" from HP like the TV's, Cameras, and now Touchpads and smart phones.... HP looks very confused about its strategy. No wonder the stock has performed so poorly for years.

if we get Dropbox in WebOS , it will be amazing...This app makes easier to share any files mainly pics

any possibilities ?

by GizmoGladstone on ‎09-09-2011 08:45 AM

Don't konw about dropbox, but I DO know that there is a free Box.Net app available and with it, I got hooked up with 50GB of free storage.

Dan (anon) - Is there a trick to make Scrabble work in FB? I'm running webOS 3.0.4 and still have the (no) drag & drop issue. Thx...
