Up to now, we’ve given you only tiny glimpses of the HP slate device coming out later this year. You saw it first in a video we released during CES and most recently in videos demoing its Web experience and Adobe Flash and Air support. We’ve also blogged about the evolution of the slate category and our history in the space.
So far, almost everything we’ve shared showcases how you’ll consume media with the device. And by media we mean all types of digital content, whether it’s a story from a major news outlet or videos and photos you’ve shot. But we also believe that media consumption is only half of the ideal mobile experience.
Think about the last time you chatted with friends over Skype on your notebook. Or uploaded a picture from your mobile phone to Facebook or Flickr. How about the last time you viewed images or video from an SD card or a USB device. We know that you expect to be able to capture and share digital content on your mobile devices. And the HP slate device excels there.
Take a look at our newest video. As you’ll see, we’re putting a lot of thought into the design to make sure we deliver an optimal mobile experience.
What did you spot in the video – and what are you looking forward to seeing next? Go on Twitter, YouTube, and our forums and tell us. In the mean time, sign up for updates on hp.com/slate.
And no post would be complete without a word from our friends at the FCC: this device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.
This is not an iPad killer. Not even close if these new specs are correct. Battery life is only 5 hours? This sounds like a netbook without a keyboard.
If you want to take on Apple, then you'll need 12 hours of battery life, killer software choices, an App Store experience and a drop-dead crystal clear screen. We have been using the iPad in our home since Saturday. My kids love it and have had no problems using it from day one. It's not a desktop/laptop replacement. And for those who think it's just an iPod Touch; I hope you don't work for HP. This is a new type of user experience.
I think HP should be working on a new design ASAP. Apple is actually out-engineering HP when it comes to power management and packaging. I thought I would never live to see that day in Silicon Valley.
And one more thing, Windows 7 is a huge issue. I would be working on a custom Linux environment. I love the HP DreamScreen in our kitchen. It's a solid product with a lot of good design smarts. Guess what? It's not powered by Windows. It's HP doing real software engineering and design. Hats off to that team for a solid product.
I'm willing to make a public bet with HP that their new HP Slate won't come close to matching the Apple iPad's battery performance for consuming media like video/movies or running apps. Right out of the box; the Slate will have a performance issue and you can't ignore that. It's not an easy problem to solve unless of course you add a big fat battery pack to your design like many of the netbook vendors were forced into. Or maybe it's the fact that Windows 7 is like running Flash, it will consume a lot of CPU cycles and drain the battery even sooner? Can we get some benchmark testing instead of videos?
Maybe HP's competition in the Windows market will deliver better battery performance so the game is on.
You know that like all brands it doesn't matter what apps you put on the thing, what out-of-the-box features it has, how much it weighs or how it looks.
It's not an iPad.
I'm not trolling here, just trying to make a valid point. You're going to have to work very hard to convince that 90% of your potential market that just says "But I want an iPad" irregardless of a product's feature-set.
Dealing with HP customer Service is worse than spending a year in HELL. After the worst experience of my life with a faulty DV9218tx, I would recommend that people stay away from anything that has the hp logo, no matter how good it looks on paper.
is this a consumer electronic or a computer, this question should be always on designer's mind, and put away all unnecessary stuff from desktop... it's a portable consumer electronic!!! not a computer/notebook....it's just have the ability to read/view the contents from normal computers... what the point making it able to run office, that's rubbish, simple editor/note taking software is enough.....if I want to run office and full editing, I'll go for my notebook....
Given the opportunity, I would pre-order one today! I am telling everyone to hold out on buying the Ipad until the take a look at the Slate...btw forget the JooJoo!
I like how the video shows a user connecting an Ipod to the Slate and running itunes....funny, you can't do that with the Ipad! :-)
would have been better if it had a slightly bigger screen and capacity to make phone calls. i had a wireless modem that also had the capacity to make phone calls. doesn't seem so difficult unless hp guys deliberately don't want to give that facility in this device. anyway, hoping to see these devices soon.
it might seem stupid, but add a GPS chip and you'll get a real edge over the Ipad. Otherwise it's just catch-up even with multi-tasking, camera and flash... really! Imagine the world of possibilities even without a 3G connection: you could download maps and go with the Slate in the stree walking or driving and discover the city in a complete deferent way! Imagine matching it with a camera and Geotagging! I know a phone can do that already but just imagine that added value in applications etc... At least release different price levels of devices...
Also: start giving approximate release dates... people won't wait that long without at least showing the courtesy of an approximate release date...

The most important thing to me is freedom. I want to be able to write software for this device, and to be able to distribute it without asking HP's permission (or anyone else's permission, for that matter). I want to be able to run GNU / Linux on the thing. I want it to be my device.
Please, HP, don't follow Apple's lead and adopt mandatory software DRM.
Ok, so when does it come out?? Will it turn on in seconds like the i Pad, or do I have to wait for it to start up?? What's the battery life like?? Will it come out before the iPad2?? Will it have thousands of applycations and games?? Will it load the programs quickly?
I won't buy this HP to replace the IPAD. If you look little bit carefully, you will feel this device is slow comparing with IPAD. I don't have patient to finish watching the whole video clip. I think HP has to do something better to compete with IPAD. I am waiting the one from Microsoft, that one is cool.
I'm glad to see that there's at least one USB port and a camera, along with flash support. That says to me that this is more of a computing device than a solely media-oriented slate. Will there be keyboard/mouse support?
