Freeware Friday: Disk Space Fan 4

by PaulAraquistain February - last edited February

I love when technology and art converge. Sometimes it materializes as exciting new ways to bring art to wider audiences (check out the VIP Art Fair 2.0, which showcases art from the world's most prominent contemporary art galleries in an online “fair”), or sometimes it’s just plain old-fashioned good design (have you seen the new HP ENVY 14 Spectre premium Ultrabook?). And sometimes it takes the form of something completely unexpected – like Disk Space Fan 4, a freeware utility that helps you clean up your hard drive.

diskfan4.JPGWhere does the art come in? Per the Disk Space Fan website: “Learn what's on your hard drive via a beautiful graph that will remind you of a futuristic art piece.” Even more cool, it’s interactive, animated, functional art that reminds me a bit of a 21st century version of “spin art.”

Disk Space Fan 4 analyzes your disk space (including CD/DVD drives) and then presents it to you as a multilayered pie chart (or what the developer calls a “flower chart”) in which directories are shown as different colors. The bigger the directory or file, the bigger the piece of the pie. Hover over a segment of the pie and you can see file details; click on the segment and you can drill down to a whole new flower chart for the subdirectories (great transitional animation), all the way down to the individual file level. You can even open a file from the chart.

Disk Space Fan 4 offers full compatibility with 32- and 64-bit Windows. There’s also a pay version (on sale for $9.95) that offers extended functionality, such as deleting files, checking updates automatically, listing files and filtering views.

Cleaning up your hard drive is one of those things that we should all do every now and then, but none of us really enjoys (sort of like going to the dentist – not fun, but you feel great afterward and you’re off the hook for another six months). So if you have to do it, why not get creative with it?

When was the last time you cleaned up the drives on your computer? (And enjoyed the view while doing it?)
